CALAPOOYA LUMBER COMPANY
South of Brownsville
May 14, 1942: "The new sawmill is definitely one of the most up-to-date of the smaller mills in the country. Construction which started February 7 has been in charge of F. A. St. Clair. Much preparatory work had been done at that time, as the mill site was formerly farm land adjoining the Southern Pacific tracks one mile south and one mile west of town.
Accomplishments include a good solid spur line for loading, constructed to the mill; new Mountain States power lines and poles from the highway to supply electricity; dredging for the mill pond which is supplied by water from Courtney creek and a well drilled for that purpose, in addition to other yard improvements.
Members of the firm, in town this morning, expressed their deep appreciation to the townspeople and business men of Brownsville and their crew for their fine cooperative spirit and complimented the Times and advertisers for their efforts of putting out a special edition.
Manager Vollstedt announced that applications are being received for part of the crew. Prevailing wages will be paid, he stated." (The Times)
