September 19, 1946: "The biggest tree ever to come out of Josephine County, measuring 8 feet in diameter, was hauled into the Merlin Lumber Company in Grants Pass last week. It took three trucks to haul it to the mill.
Four other fir trees were brought in at the same time, each but slightly smaller than the butt cut. Ten trucks in all were used to haul the five huge firs to the mill'
Clyde Houghton, logging superintendent stated the huge tree would scale 23,000 board feet. He made no estimate of the other four trees." (Illinois Valley News)
