ST. HELENS SHINGLE COMPANY
Scappoose Bay
October 1, 1920: "Another enterprise is a shingle mill. It will be known as the St. Helens Shingle Company. The capital stock of the company is $50,000 and W. S. Strange is interested in Kelso and operated the shingle mill at Ban Station. The mill was destroyed by fire recently and Mr. Strange decided to locate here. The mill will be built on Scappoose Bay, just southwest of St. Helens Creosoting plant. It is to be a eight machine mill with a daily capacity of 400,000 shingles. The plans and specifications have been prepared and Mr. Strange and his mill superintendent will be here tomorrow to start work on the project.
To a representative of the Mist Mr. Strange stated that he would bring to St. Helens twenty families. The mill which he will build, will furnish employment to not less than thirty men and the product will be shipped by both rail and water. The St. Helens Dock & Terminal Company have made plans to extend their railroad track to the shingle mill and both water and rail facilities will be provided." (St. Helens Mist)
