December 1, 1957: "Lease for five years of the Milwaukie Plywood co-operative's plant here has been revealed by Noble H. Chowning, manager of the Coquille Valley Lumber company.
Chowning's firm has been operating the plant on a trial basis the past six months. Approval of the lease was voted by members of the co-op, with 155 of the 223 stockholders voting for the move.
Employment will be given co-op members in preference to others, according to the agreement announced by co-op officials and Chowning. The plant currently employes 155 persons.
The Coquille firm operates a sawmill and veneer plant at Swisshome and will obtain veneer logs for both plants from a sustained yield contract cutting on the Umpqua national forest, Chowning indicated." (The Sunday Oregonian)
