SOUTHFORK LUMBER COMPANY
Broadbent
January 29, 1959: "The Herzog Lumber mill at Broadbent, under lease by Georgia-Pacific to the Southfork Lumber Co., Gaylord Gregory, proprietor, burned to the ground last Friday evening, the fire, cause of which is unknown, started about 6:05 o'clock. The mill itself was completely destroyed, though the Coos Fire Patrol at Bridge was on the job as quickly as possible, assisted by G-P fire trucks. The loss is estimated at approximately $150,000, most of which was covered by insurance, according to Mr. Gregory.
According to Mr. Gregory, the mill employed 30 men in the mill itself and an effort is being made to double the shift at the Powers mill that no employes will be thrown out of work because of the catastrophe. Mr. Gregory could not say as to whether the mill would be rebuilt in the immediate future.
The Herzog mill was one of the most modern lumber mills in Southern Oregon." (Myrtle Point Herald)
