LAKEVIEW PLANING MILL
Lakeview
February 7, 1901: “Lakeview can now boast of a thoroughly equipped planing mill and general manufactory of wood furnishings. The enterprising owners of this establishment are Messrs. Handley & Clendenen, two of the best mechanics in this section. The firm has just put in place one of those famous Leffel engines of eight-horse power, and have all kinds of machinery to do the work of a first class planing mill. Theirs is the only Leffel engine in operation in this section. It is a handsome piec of machinery and gives thorough satisfaction. Handley & Clendenen say the Leffel is by great odds the best engine they have ever seen in motion. The firm is prepared to do contracting and building of any description, and have the machinery to turn out their own furnishings. They are now manufacturing sash, blinds, mouldings, window and door casings and furniture of any description. They also make beehives to order.” (Lake County Examiner)
October 2, 1902: “Reynolds & Wingfield have bought the planing mill building and lease of the lot opposite S. F. Ahlstrom's saddlery, and will use it for a warehouse. Handley & Clendenen are building a larger planing mill in South Lakeview, opposite the residence of C. E. Sherlock, and will soon have their machinery humming away in the new location. The planing mill is doing a rushing business and the energetic proprietors are not losing a minute's time in turning out all kinds of planed lumber and sash and blind work.” (Lake County Examiner)
