September 9, 1896: "Chas. Kibbe, while lifting the large water gate at Messenger's upper sawmill yesterday noon, fell, striking his back on the edge of a raised platform. He was internally injured, but to what extent was not known at last report." (The Ashland Advertiser)
April 25, 1901: "H. C. Messenger's planing mill in town and his saw mill two miles southwest of town gives out a pay roll of $500 per month. Those engaged at the saw mill are R. J. Shaw, Walter J. Messenger, Mr. Sharp, Otis Millsap, Mr. Inman, Louis Medley, Chas Milsap, and two whose names we cannot obtain. Geo Yount and Austin Howell haul the lumber to town, and I. O. Miller and W. H.
