December 1, 1916: “Two more options for the purchase of cedar timber to supply the Monroe Mill company's shingle mill, near Mapleton, have been filed at the court house. The mill company contracted for 1,100,000 feet of cedar from E. F. and Sausabel Arnold at $1 a thousand, and for 1,800,000 feet from William and L. M. Bernhardt. Both tracts are located in township 18, south, range 11 west.---Guard.” (The West)
December 1, 1916: "The Monroe Timber company, of Monroe, Wash., has taken options upon several tracts of timber bordering the lower Siuslaw river. The company is erecting a shingle mill below Mapleton and the timber on the land is to be used for the manufacture of shingles." (The Oregon Daily Journal)
January 26, 1917: “A new station has been established by the railroad company at the new shingle mill a short distance below Beck.” (The West)
February 2, 1917: “The new station at the shingle mill above Cushman has been named Betzen, in honor of Miss Bettie Zentner, daughter of engineer O. L. Zentner. The name is formed by combining the first syllable from each of the young lady's names.” (The West)
