FLIPPIN, KELBY AND HALL
Vernonia
October 13, 1922: “Messrs. Flippin, Kelby and Hall have purchased the Johnson shingle mill near town and we understand that Mr. Johnson will start a new mill up Rock Creek. Many small mills surrounding Vernonia will make wheels of industry spin.” (Vernonia Eagle)
March 23, 1923: “Saturday morning we were sorry to hear the news of the burning of the Flippin & Hall Shingle mill, or the 'Dock Jones Mill,' near Vernonia. The owners had not owned the mill long. They purchased a nice bunch of cedar and were running steady, with night shift part of the time.
In addition to the mill about 175,000 shingles were burned, and the top of Mr. Lane's auto destroyed. This is certainly tough luck when shingles are so much in demand here. The company will rebuild. No insurance was carried.
The same day of the fire a valuable horse of the company's laid down and died.” (Vernonia Eagle)
