June 26, 1921: "The mill of the J. A. Gordon Lumber company, formerly the Klamath River Lumber company, located seven miles from Dorris just over the state line in Oregon, was totally destroyed by a fire that started about 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon.
J. A. Gordon, cashier of the First National bank of this city and owner of the mill, stated the mill had been closed down about two weeks ago and that there was no fire of any sort around the plant. He declared he was at an utter loss to understand how a fire could have started and ventured the opinion that from report he had received from there by phone that there was every reason to suspect incendiarism.
This comes as the second destructive mill fire in this section recently, the last one being the burning of the Peppers-Cotton lumber yard near Macdoel, June 19, where incendiarism also was suspected.
The Gordon mill was valued at over $30,000, according to Gordon, and carried insurance in amount of $10,000. It was built in January, 1920, by W. M. Morrison. Since the property came into the hands of J. A. Gordon the mill has been managed by George A. Stephenson, formerly of Swan Lake Lumber company.
Gordon stated that men had been at work around the yard loading lumber during the afternoon but that no work was being done in the mill, and that there seemed no reason for anyone being in the mill at all." (Klamath Daily Record)
