HUNTINGTON SHINGLE COMPANY
|
Lane County - Mapleton
|
December 27, 1924: "The articles of incorporation of the Huntington Shingle company were filed today at the office of the county clerk. The incorporators are Fred B. Walter, and Edwin C. Huntington. The capital stock of the concern will be $2000. The company is empowered to engage in practically all branches of the lumber business." (The Eugene Guard)
October 17, 1933: "A new idea in shingle manufacture has been evolved by the Huntington Shingle company at Mapleton and the new shingles are now belt turned out at that mill, according to W. L. Huntington, manager of the mill.
The new idea consists of an exposure mark made on the shingle with a machine which has been recently installed. The machine was invented by Huntington who has applied for a patent.
The shingles are fed into the machine which makes a black mark on both sides of the shingle, five inches from the butt. This exposure, or weather mark, enables those laying shingles to do away with chalk marks and other devices formerly used to lay the shingles properly.
It also prohibits cheating on the part of dishonest contractors who might not give the proper exposure in shingles, hoping to use less material in that way, Huntington says." (The Eugene Guard)
