DAVENPORT & COMPANY
March 9, 1908: "There is much activity among the small sawmills on the Sandy River. Davenport & Co. have secured control of the Bramhall and Fox sawmills, located a short distance from the Sandy. Already the Bramhall mill has been completely overhauled and remodeled and where before it was cutting about 400 railroad ties daily, the output has been doubled. The Fox mill is being overhauled and its capacity will be about doubled. The new owners are experienced mill men and are improving both sawmills. Ties will be run into the Sandy River by flumes such as had been used before, and then rafted down to Troutdale.
Sometimes there are many thousands of ties floating down the Sandy River in bunches, all mixed together. Each sawmill has a brand which is stamped son the ties so that they can be separated as they are pulled out of the river. The market for railroad ties is never satisfied. Troutdale continues to be one of the largest tie-shipping points in Oregon." (Morning Oregonian)
