SHELLEY CREEK MILL & TIMBER, INC.
Josephine County - 14 mile from O'Brien
January 13, 1949: "One of the new industries for the Illinois Valley is the Shelley Creek Mill & Timber, Inc., located about 14 miles from O'Brien on the old Oregon Mountain stage road. The mill operated about a month before the holidays and then shut down to install larger saws and a new feed carriage. A new 50 x 50 foot slab burner was also erected. The mill will cut approximately 35,000 feet daily when it gets into full operation.
Located near a large belt of virgin timber, is the reason for its construction in its present location. It is much easier to truck lumber down the hill than it would be to bring logs down to a mill in the Valley. Much of the timber is some of the finest Douglas fir in southern Oregon.
As soon as it can be wired, the mill will be run by electricity, now it is using a Diesel engine. David N. Plant is the manager and Henry Webb is superintendent of the woods crew.
Shelley Creek Mill & Timber, Inc., is owned and operated by Lew and Helen Krauss, George and Henry Webb, J. H. Pomeroy and David N. Plant. As soon as the cold spell lets up, the mill will be in operation again, filing special orders that are already on the books for delivery as soon as possible." (Illinois Valley News)
