January 17, 1946: "W. H. Daugherty of Cottage Grove today announced purchase of the J. H. Chambers and Son logging and timber properties at Cottage Grove and Lorane. According to United Press the sale was believed to have involved more than $1,000,000.
At the same time, Daugherty revealed sale of his Cottage Grove wholesale lumber company and mill to four employes, Cecil Caldwell, and Joe Bricher, assistant sales managers; Vincent Bricher, now in the army at Camp Knight, Cal., but an employe of the company prior to his induction; and Kenneth Hickok, head accountant of the firm.
Daugherty will incorporate the Chambers mills and the timber properties under the name of the Lorane Valley Lumber company, and has announced that he will continue their operation without any change in the polices of his predecessor, the late J. H. Chambers, who opened the enterprise in 1903.
In addition to the mills at Cottage Grove and Lorane, the purchase includes 25 miles of logging railroad, 275,000,000 feet of Douglas fir timber located west of Cottage Grove and a tree nursery. The two mills have a cutting capacity of 200,000 feet daily, and employ about 150 men." (The Eugene Guard)

October 27, 1950: "The Lorane Valley Lumber company mill in south Cottage Grove was half destroyed when a blinding flash at 9:25 p. m. was followed by balls of fire racing through the plant. Heavy rain accompanied the wind and mill supt. G. J. Lyon said the start apparently was from a transformer, shorted by the rain or blown by a power surge.
Fire companies from Eugene, Springfield and Creswell joined the Cottage Grove volunteers. They still were pouring water on the blaze at 6 a.m. The headrig, resaw, one planer and saw shop were in ruins. Damage was over $600,000, owner W. H. Daugherty said." (The News-Review)
