CROMWELL & YEATON
Rainier
July 26, 1871: "Sawmill Burned.---A dispatch was received here two days since that the sawmill of Cromwell & Yeaton, near Rainier, on the Columbia, was burned. We are sorry to see this report confirmed by the Portland papers. Also to know that 60,000 feet of valuable cedar lumber was burned at the same time. The mill was lately built by our townsmen, and their enterprise deserved better reward. There was no insurance, it seems.
Since the above was put in type, we have been informed by Mr. A. T. Yeaton, who has just received a letter from his brother, that over hundred thousand feet of lumber and six dwellings with all their contents were destroyed except a trunk and cabinet organ. Several of the men barely escaped with their lives. The mill caught on fire from the burning woods. They have commenced to rebuild it and it will be put in order as soon as possible."
