August 3, 1945: "Purchase of the Westfir Lumber company, division of Blyth & Company, Inc., by the Edward Hines Lumber company of Chicago, was announced Thursday by Peter J. McHugh, senior vice-president of the Hines concern.
The deal is reported to have involved well over $1,000,000.
McHugh announced that the Westfir properties were acquired Wednesday. There had been a three-day shutdown for inventory and when operations were resumed Wednesday the same personnel was employed, McHugh said.
The Hines company will continue to operate in government timber in the Willamette National forest, said McHugh.
The Westfir operations normally employ about 400, but under the wartime labor shortage now employ about 235.
The mill has a rated capacity of 200,000 board feet per eight hours. McHugh said the Hines company plans to cut about 60,000,000 feet annually at present. If labor could be obtained, the output could be stepped up to 100,000,000 feet it was stated.
No changes in management personnel are being made under the Hines ownership, said McHugh." (The Eugene Guard)
