SMITH BROTHERS
Gold Hill
April 29, 1896: "A workman by the name of J. R. Collins, in the sawmill of Smith Bros., near Gold Hill, met with a very painful accident last Wednesday, and he was taken to Medford for treatment. The accident occurred in the morning, the saw of the edger table cutting the back of his left hand just above the knuckles, severing the veins and the cords, and badly mangling the hand." (The Ashland Advertiser)
August 24, 1900: "J. T. Miller, he who now lives at Gold Hill, but who formerly sold Singer sewing machines in Medford, met with an accident Monday which will lay him up for a month or six weeks at least. He was at work in the J. U. Smith sawmill, near Gold Hill, and was engaged in giving some instructions about oiling an edging saw, when his right hand in some manner came in contact with the running saw and his thumb was cut almost entirely off and the flesh was badly torn. Mr. Miller came to Medford on the morning train and Dr. Pickel dressed the wound. It is thought the thumb can be saved, but it will be many weeks before he will be able to use it. Mr. Miller's friends are sorely aggrieved at his misfortune. He was just getting squarely on his feet, financially, and had a good, steady job." (The Medford Mail)
