SOUTHERN OREGON PLYWOOD, INC.
Josephine County - Grants Pass
April 15, 1948: "Incorporated under the laws of the State of Oregon recently, was a million dollar plywood plant to be erected on the 10-acre tract formerly used in Grants Pass as the chrome stock pile during the last war.
Bringing the plant to Grants Pass was made possible through the efforts of the Grants Pass and Josephine County Chamber of Commerce. Several times it seemed that such a plant would be located there, but the supply of peeler logs was always the handicap. However, the present incorporators own their own supply of peeler logs and this matter was not considered, and the plant was finally made possible.
The incorporators are J. J. Villair, of the Villair Lumber company, who has been identified with the lumber industry ion the valley for nearly 20 years; Samuel J. Miller, proprietor of Muir Court, and John Nylund, manager of the Oregon Caves Lumber company.
Capital stock of the new company is placed at $1,000,000 in 10,000 shares, $100 par value, and nearly all stock holders are from the county, making this project a purely local concern. Southern Oregon Plywood, Inc., is the incorporated name.
The machinery for the plant has been placed for some time, because it was necessary to get the order in long before delivery would be made. The plant will be equipped with the last word in plywood manufacturing machinery.
When in operation the plant will employ 150 men with a $35,000 monthly payroll." (Illinois Valley News)
