June 14, 1945: "Today (Thursday) at about 12:30 p. m. the Craig mill located on Deer creek, near Selma, owned by the Fleishman Lumber company of Grants Pass, caught on fire and was completely destroyed.
Workmen at the mill believe the fire started from a hot box on the engine. News of the fire was very meager as The News goes to press, and details are not known.
Dick Sowell, state fire warden, was at the Schmidt mill, about three miles from Selma, and noticed a volume of smoke coming from the Craig mill direction. He hurried over there with the fire truck, but the mill was too far gone to save.
Logs in the pond, we were told, were not burned and the men salvaged considerable lumber. The Redwood Ranger station was not called until 2:30, and when a crew arrived, the mill was completely burned down. No other details are available at this time." (Illinois Valley News)
