SLOPER & SON
Polk County - Independence
January 18, 1873: "Messrs. Sloper & Son propose to convert their saw mill, at Independence, Polk county, into a grist mill, at an early day. This will prove a material benefit to the citizens of that vicinity." (The Benton Democrat)
May 27, 1876: "Mr. Chamness, formerly of this place (Eugene) had a narrow escape at Sloper's Mill, near Dallas, last week. The iron dog that holds the log in position fell before the saw, and was cut in twain, while every tooth in the saw but one, was broken, and the saw itself badly bent. A piece of the dog struck Mr. Chamness, but did not hurt him seriously." (The Eugene City Guard)
