October 5, 1928: “C. M. Johnson announces plans of the Sitka Spruce Pulp and Paper Co., a corporation organized by him with a capitalization of $1,000,000 which will be operating a 50-ton mill a mile and a half southwest of Empire on Three Mile creek by next May or June, says the Coos Bay Harbor. Wood for making pulp will be obtained by the company through its own camps and by purchase in the open market. Spruce, white fir and hemlock will be used in the operations of manufacturing the pulp.” (The Siuslaw Oar)
October 12, 1928: “It looks like Empire is to have a 50-ton pulp mill. Promises have been made. But once before the same outfit had Coquille in mind as a location.” (The Siuslaw Oar)
November 30, 1928: “Contractors are building a road to the site of the new pulp plant to be constructed by C. McC. Johnson near Empire. Already supervisors of the construction are on the ground and as soon as the road is built, actual work will start. Construction plans are being rushed.---Courier.” (The Siuslaw Oar)
December 6, 1928: "Timbers are being shipped from the Johnson mill at Reedsport for building the first unit of the Sitka spruce pulp and paper mill at Empire, in Coos county." (Halsey Enterprise)
November 15, 1929: “The Sitka Spruce & Pulp sawmill began operations last week. Capacity 150,000 daily. The pulp plant will be in operation soon.” (The Siuslaw Oar)
November 29, 1929: “The pulp plant at Empire is now in operation. More than 150 men are employed and $1,000,000 has been expended in building the plant.” (The Siuslaw Oar)
