GERLINGER'S SAWMILL
Boring
August 22, 1904: "Nearly 100 men united their effort to save the sawmill of L. Gerlinger, in the timber four miles east of Boring. For a time Friday night it looked as if the mill and all buildings, in which were stored the belongings of the men, would be destroyed. The fire approached within a short distance of the sawmill, and the men removed their household goods and loaded them on a flat car of the electric railway, and moved them out of danger. All the other cars of the company were pulled to Boring by the locomotive. The tired men fought fire nearly all Friday night before it was finally checked, or the danger had passed. Yesterday the mill was considered safe, unless an east wind should spring up, and start the fires up again. If this should happen it is thought the mill cannot be saved." (Morning Oregonian)
