April 28, 1920: "Operations will begin at the Tuff's Timber Company's plant in the Dead Indian district shortly. According to reports from that section everything is practically in readiness to begin running the mill, and from 30 to 40 men are there waiting good weather, when work will start. A contract has been let to a Medford firm to take out the timber, which will be delivered down the valley by motor trucks." (Ashland Weekly Tidings)
April 29, 1920: "James Tuffs of the lumber firm of Tuffs Bros., who are operating a sawmill in the Dead Indian country, was a Grants Pass visitor this week." (Ashland Daily Tidings)
May 27, 1920: "Jack Whittsett, who is employed at the Tuffs sawmill in the Dead Indian district, has returned from Grants Pass where he had been spending a few days at his home." (Ashland Daily Tidings)
June 23, 1920: "Tufts Timber company, operating a mill on the Dead Indian road at the site of the old Reeser mill, started to haul lumber to Medford yesterday. The lumber will be taken from the mill by trucks through Ashland over the Pacific highway. The company is actively engaged in sawing at the plant, where upwards of 60 men are employed. It is stated the roads over the mountains are in excellent condition." (Ashland Daily Tidings)
September 29, 1920: "The Tuffs sawmill which started operation last February on the Dead Indian mountain closed the season's work this week. This mill has cut upwards of 2,000,000 feet of pine lumber which was taken by truck to Medford for shipment. A big crew of men were employed there during the past summer, earning a payroll of from $50,000 to $60,000. This sawmill has about three years' operation there. The energies of the company now will be devoted to getting the lumber off from the mountain while the weather holds good." (Ashland Weeky Tidings)
