April 25, 1939: "A picket line thrown around the Engle and Worth sawmill today was withdrawn tonight when Sheriff G. W. Manning warned it violated the state labor regulatory law. The line was assembled after CIO unionist walked out, accusing the management with discrimination against two members.
The management claimed the pickets violated the law because less than 50 per cent of the 80 employes favored the strike.
E. R. Worth, one of the operators, said the men were discharged because of incompetency and asserted that not more than 25 employes belonged to the union, Carlton local of the IWA. He said only 16 walked out and the management closed the mill rather than force the rest of the crew to work behind a picket line.
N. P. Larson, spokesman of the union grievance committee, said the only issue was the rehiring of the discharged men." (Statesman Journal)
