July 3, 1948: "Jerry McCue and Dick Taylor of Ventura, Calif., arrived Tuesday afternoon at Walterville and are staying at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Page. They have employment at the Zabriskie Brothers mill." (Register-Guard)
January 21, 1949: "Since the Zabriskie saw mill pond has frozen over here kids from one to 99 have gone ice-happy. The pond, which is now covered by six inches of ice, is the scene of the old-time sport of ice-skating.
Scoop shovels are being used for sleds, and a hockey team is being organized.
