SPANGLER LUMBER COMPANY
Bly
April 26, 1950: "The Spangler Lumber company mill at Bly will be reopened 'soon after the first of May,' owner William H. Spangler said today.
The mill has been closed for about a year after operating only a short time in 1949.
Recently Spangler purchased full control of the Bly property and said he had enough timber to start and operate this year. But, he said, the timber supply is indefinite but the mill management expects to secure enough for additional years of sawing.
Bill Hayden will be general superintendent of the Bly plant, which includes sawmill, dry kilns and planing mill.
Spangler said the mill would start at one shift a day and he expects to add another shift by the end of the month.
The mill is capable of sawing 50,000 board feet a shift and Spangler said approximately 60 men would be employed at full operation." (Herald and News)

The stand includes an estimated 2,700,000 feet of Ponderosa pine plus 75,000 feet of white fir and dead pine.
Spangler paid the minimum price of $16 a thousand for the Ponderosa and $1 a thousand for other merchantable timber. There were no other bids." (Herald and News)

June 2, 1950: "The planing mill of the Spangler Lumber company was completely destroyed by fire late yesterday afternoon.
Bill Hayden, plant manager, said the blaze apparently started from sparks from the burner. The northwest corner of the building caught first but the fire spread quickly and was over the building in a matter of minutes.
It was discovered shortly after 5 p.m. by a night watchman.
The Bly volunteer fire department and other men and water trucks were able to keep the fire confined to the planing mill so that the sawmill and other buildings in the plant were not endangered. Planing mill equipment was a total loss.
Only two men had been working in the planing mill, making some repairs in order to put in operation Monday. Hayden said he had expected to employ about 15 men in the planer.
The Spangler mill began operations May 2 after a shutdown of about a year. It is owned by William Spangler of Klamath Falls.
Hayden said the planer was partially covered by insurance, but no estimate was made of the money damage." (Herald and News)
