EMERSON SAWMILL
Josephine County - O'Brien
July 22, 1948: "A spark from the Emerson Mill slab fire started a forest fire Tuesday, July 20. The fire took off on a steep brushy slope east of the mill. It ran to the top of the hill in front of a brisk breeze and ran into old cat-roads cut during previous logging.
The fire was controlled by John Moe's State crew, and Emerson Mill crew. Bill Moore and John Kincaid of the State were also there to assist in directing the action.
The mill was shut down Wednesday, while the crew mopped up the hot spots and fell snags in the fire lines.
Remember the forests are dry and that everyone loses when timber burns." (Illinois Valley News)
