April 5, 1901: "Walter Longheed, an employee in the sawmill of Perkins & Longheed, at Marcola, was badly hurt yesterday morning while at work in the mill. He was running the edger, when his right arm was drawn into the saw, and severely cut at the wrist joint. He was brought to Eugene on the 2 o'clock train, and was taken at once to the Booth-Kelly hospital. Drs. Paine and Kuykendall, who dressed the injured part, found that a number of the small bones of the wrist had been torn out by the saw. They hope, however, that enough of the structural material of the wrist remains to admit of saving the hand.
Walter Longheed, who is but seventeen years old, is a nephew of G B Longheed, and but recently came to Oregon from Colorado." (Morning Register)
