February 8, 1918: "Some time ago we stated that D. L. Chesley of Waldport was in Toledo looking for a mill site, and that he was almost certain of locating here. We are now pleased to inform our readers that Mr. Chesley and G. B. McCluskey have concluded a deal, whereby they have leased the Altree Mill and will have same cutting lumber by the first of June. The mill will have a capacity of twenty thousand feet per day, and it is expected to cut mostly ties. A wagon road will be built from the mill to connect with the bridge across the tideland. Mr. Chesley is an old hand at the sawmill business, and has been in charge of the mill at Waldport the past seven or eight years. He will go to Portland Tuesday to arrange for machinery, and work will be begun at once to get the mill ready for operation." (Lincoln County Leader)
March 29, 1918: "D. L. Chelsey arrived up from Waldport the first of the week and now has a force of men getting the old Altree mill ready for business. Machinery has been purchased and is expected to begin arriving next week. The work of placing same will be rushed as fast as possible, and it is thought that the mill will be ready by May 1st. A. I. Turner of Corvallis has been engaged as engineer. Neither Mr. Chesley or Mr. Turner will move their families here until after school closes." (Lincoln County Leader)
April 5, 1918: "The Chesley Lumber Company this week entered into contract with J. A. Peterson, whereby the latter will log a forty acre tract of timber on Mill Creek, that is owned by the company. It is estimated that there is about a million feet of timber in the tract.
J. C. Altree and crew is logging the Margson timber for this company and it is thought the mill will be sawing by the first of May. The mill machinery is expected in the first of next week, and will be installed at once. Mr. Chesley and crew are making rapid headway with the repairs to the building." (Lincoln County Leader)

April 26, 1918: "Work at the Chesley lumber Co's. mill has been progressing very satisfactorily this week and they expect to saw the first log Monday or Tuesday of next week, and the mill will start up full blast Wednesday, May 1st. They will probably operate a nine hour shift." (Lincoln County Leader)
May 10, 1918: "The Chesley Lumber Co. now have everything running smoothly and have been operating full time this week. The mill is cutting mostly ties at present, but we are informed that they will cut considerable timbers for the government railroad construction from Newport to Waldport. Mr. and Mrs. Chesley are living over by the mill, and will build a house there as soon as lumber can be sawn for its construction." (Lincoln County Leader)
