SAM UMPHREY PILING COMPANY
Josephine County - O'Brien
January 30, 1941: "Preliminary action is stirring around O'Brien for the Sam Umphrey Piling company of California, and work is expected to start in the immediate future cutting, peeling and shipping piling to the bay regions of California.
Mr. Umphrey is located in the Del Rogue hotel in Grants Pass where the general office for the company are located. Carl Magerle is superintendent of operations in the valley and his office is at Lawson's Auto camp at O'Brien.
The piling is being cut near O'Brien and the company expects to have 18 men employed as fast as they can be secured. They will operate two big trucks hauling the piling to Grants Pass and they will be shipped to California. Construction operations will be started immediately, so we are informed and as soon as the logs are peeled they will be hauled to Grants Pass and shipped.
Mr. Umphrey is looking for more timber to cut piling and will enlarge the operations as soon as it is secured.
While we were not so informed, it is believed that the piling is for government construction and defense purposes and is needed in a hurry." (Illinois Valley News)
