PENDLETON LUMBER COMPANY
..
September 10, 1909: “Pendleton.---Pendleton is to have a new industry in the shape of a planing mill. Ben Hill, manager of the Pendleton Lumber company, has made announcement and expects to install the plant as soon as a suitable location can be found. The mill when in operation will employ about 30 men and will do both retail and wholesale business.” (The Glendale News)
June 16, 1949: "Fire, the origin of which was not fully determined the first of the week, destroyed the sawmill plant of the Pendleton Lumber company late Saturday afternoon. Stacks of lumber in considerable amount, the dry kiln and a lumber shed escaped the ravages of the fire which was one of the most spectacular conflagrations witnessed in the Umatilla city in several years.
The plant is owned by Orville Smith of Heppner and Charles Dower of Pendleton.
Monday's East Oregonian said the plant will be rebuilt in the immediate future, since the concern had important orders to fill. Temporary offices have been set up in the chamber of commerce rooms in the city.
Orville Smith and Jack Forsythe had flown to Seattle Saturday and flew to Pendleton as soon as they received word of the fire arriving there late that evening." (Heppner Gazette-Times)
