June 8, 1895: "The Roseburg Plaindealer says that fire broke out at 11:45, June 8, in the roof of the office of the Hudson Mills and Lumber Co., which joins their store, and was nor discovered until beyond control. Burned both buildings which were about 25 by 50 feet and spreading from there to the mill yard which was about 50 feet distant and joining the mill, burned over 200,000 feet of nice lumber, also the depot house, two cars and about half the side track belonging to the S. P. R. R. Co. As the fire progressed towards the mill, along through the yard, the crowd of fire-fighter increased till finally when it was just beginning to catch the mill, they got it under control and saved the mill and about 75,000 feet of lumber, also all the goods and safe. Loss being about $3000. The owners of the mill property are J. B. Heald and the estate of Chas. Hollyfield. While it was quite a loss to the company they still have a very large supply of logs and will commence running again soon." (Cottage Grove Echo=Leader)
