April 10, 1919: "An enormous market for west coast lumber products is opening in the Middle West, according to W. F. Johnson of Indianapolis, Ind. Mr. Johnson arrived from the East this morning and will be permanently located in Oregon as president and manager of the Western Lumber & Export company. The new concern recently purchased the mill and other holdings of the Brown Lumber company at Cottage Grove. The Brown mill has a daily capacity of 75,000 feet and employs about 100 men. Logs are secured from government sales of forest reserve timber." (The Oregon Daily Journal)
August 12, 1919: "The Western Lumber & Export company of Cottage Grove, successor to the U. S. Logging company, has been awarded the sale of a large tract in the Umpqua National forest, prices being $1.25 per 1000 for Douglas fir and cedar and 50 cents per 1000 for other species. This tracty adjoins timber lands already owned by the purchasing company." (The Oregon Daily Journal)
February 28, 1922: "The sawmill of the Western Lumber and Export company is located at Cottage Grove. William F. Johnson is the president and manager. The capacity of the mill is 100 M. and the 1920 cut was 16,000,000 feet. The company employs nearly 200 men and its payroll amounts to $260,000 yearly. A planing mill and dry kiln is operated in connection with the sawmill. The mill owns no timber but logs off the Umpqua national forest by contract. The logs are hauled 25 miles to the mill at Cottage Grove over the O. P. & E. railroad. The company owns eight miles of its own logging railroad." (The Eugene Guard)
September 30, 1922: "Fire, caused by an overheated burner, at 8 o'clock last night destroyed the electric light plant at the Western Lumber & Export company's sawmill. The sawmill was saved. The fire put Cottage Grove in darkness, as current for the city passed through the burned plant." (The Oregon Daily Journal)
November 1923: "Western Lumber & Export Co., Cottage Grove, Ore. has become insolvent and the affairs of the company were placed in receivership October 26. J. H. Chambers, of Cottage Grove, and Walter Myers, Indianapolis, are receivers. The Western Logging Co., a subsidiary to the lumber company6, made application for the receivership." November 1, 1923: “The Western Lumber & Export company of Cottage Grove, operating one of the largest sawmills in Lane county, has gone into the hands of receivers.” (The Drain Enterprise)
