SPAULDING LOGGING COMPANY
Independence
July 28, 1910: "The Spaulding Logging Company's sawmill located at Independence burned down Saturday afternoon. C. K. Spaulding, accompanied by N. J. Sykes, of Portland, went up Sunday evening to view the remains and size up the situation. The loss was reported in the papers as $30,000 but after getting on the ground, Nelson Sykes informs the Graphic that the engines and boilers are in fairly good shape and that with the amount of material saved the loss is about $7,000 with $4,000 insurance. It is doubtful about the Company's rebuilding at Independence at present as it is as much as a bargain that they are able to supply their remaining mills with all the logs they can take care of."
