SITKA SPRUCE COMPANY
Coos County
April 27, 1917: "Tuesday a scow load of 165,000 feet of spruce was brought up from the Aasen logging camp to the Sitka Spruce Co.s' mill here and on Wednesday and Thursday it was all sawed. This mill is now sawing from 75,000 to 60,000 feet a day, and just as soon as Craine's Camp begins to deliver logs a night shift will be put on which will run the total away above 100,000." (The Coquille Valley Sentinel)
May 25, 1917: "R. A. Wernich, of the Sitka Spruce Company, yesterday announced that logs will be arriving from Craine's camp this week and that their mill will in future work full time with no more delays because of lack of logs. That this will be welcome news to the various members of their crew goes without saying. During the past two months the mill has been compelled to shut down from this cause many times and it has cost the company considerable effort and not a inconsiderable financial loss to keep the crew together.
During the past weeks the decks have been cleared of the accumulation of lumber and with adequate shipping facilities which they are now promised and with a sufficient supply of logs constantly on hand steady operation is assured. Heretofore on several occasions they have been compelled to change from spruce to fir to keep running, but this will not be necessary in future, so we are told." (The Coquille Valley Sentinel)
