May 9, 1950: "Sentence will be passed next Monday morning on Edna Sherred, bookkeeper accused of embezzling $4483.93 from Kalpine Plywood company.
She pleaded guilty yesterday afternoon in circuit court.
The young woman remains free on $7500 bail until Monday.
Her attorney, Clarence A. Humble, has asked that she be placed on probation, basing his plea on her cooperation with Kalpine auditors in determining the amount of money taken, cooperation with the district attorney's office in admitting the thefts and on an offer to make restitution.
Her father has offered to repay the $4483.93 from the $7500 cash bail he put up for Miss Sherred.
The Kalpine company, it's local manager, Andrew Honzel, and Attorney R. B. Maxwell, representing both the plywood company and the company bonding Miss Sherred in her job likewise have asked that she be placed on probation.
She admittedly took the money from the company over a period of 18 months ending Feb. 2 and although it was in addition to her $300-a-month salary said in court she was unable to explain where very much of it was spent.
Judge David R. Vandenberg postponed until Monday making a decision in Miss Sherred's case. He has sent to prison two persons most recently in his court charged with embezzlement." (Herald and News)
